Something I've been wondering is, why are certain moments/actions seen as corny?

When I was watching random streamers play Deltarune Chapter 4, either them, chat or both would be very annoying about SOMETHING being corny.

Usually it was when the game would start taking itself seriously or the streamer began actually engaging with Deltarune. Vinesauce is an example of the latter, he would start coming up with his own theories/interpretations of the story and what was happening, to only be told by certain people in his chat to shut up.

Or for example, during Dreamcon, there were certain Streamers who went that had a dislike for anime and nerd culture. They'd talk about how they didn't like Anime or [sic] "that weird shit" and would kind of bash on others for even cosplaying.

Speaking of, cosplaying is another thing that is seen as corny by certain people.
Saying it's weird or corny, and that it's a waste of money.

And what's the common point between all of these "corny" actions? Genuinity.
All three of these actions show genuine love for what these people are into. Showing love for the game they're playing, the medium they like watching or media they love interacting with. Either by making theories, going to cons, dressing up as their favorite character, etc.

Basically 99% of the time, people who call things I mentioned above corny dislike people showing off their love and being genuine.

Why?

Well, I don't want to sound like an old man yelling at clouds, but media and people in general are becoming more ironic and self-aware. To the point that they just can't do actions without being ironic or see things not in a ironic point of view.

This is called Irony Poisoning and it's unfortunately what I see a lot of people have.
Of course, this isn't a condition or illness or anything like that. No one is dying or having their life horribly affected by this, but it is affecting how they interact with media and others.

Media recently is having more of a ironic view of itself and by this I mean, for example during a serious moment, they may try to stop it with a joke to stop themselves from seeming too serious and avoid criticism of "taking itself too seriously".

Or during explainations of the mechanics in the world, they'll probably have a character say something like "This sure is stupid." as some insecure wink to the camera saying "Yeah we also think this is stupid, but not if you don't think so....?"

This is mainly caused by certain people on the internet going this route, either because they get shut down by others, they just intake too much ironic content or just simply think it's cool to seem like they don't care about anything. Then watching/playing a movie/game and waiting for it to act like they do and once it doesn't, now it's going online and shitting on it for taking itself too seriously.

Whether it's a ton of reviews saying the same thing, a viral review like that or it just becoming the cool thing to say, it does affect the people making the art and doing it for a living. They'll adapt to what the reviews say and start making stuff that just would've taken itself seriously, but now semi-does it with a wink to the audience to avoid the same criticism.

And I'm not saying I'm completely clean of this, there are a bunch of times when I watch or play something and think something like "this is corny.", but then realize I'm doing something I dislike others doing for no reason.

There are a ton of moments when I'm making TIME COWBOY's final era that I think "Am I making this too serious?" or "Should I make this more goofier?", while I do stop myself from doing anything to make it more goofy, this thought doesn't go away.

Basically what I'm saying is, if you find something corny, try to find out why you find it corny. Is it the work taking itself serious for a moment or is there something actually worth criticizing about the dialogue, performance or something else?

Of course I'm also not trying to dictate how you speak or act, free speech and all of that, but I do recommend to not be a dickhead to people who are showing passion for media or whatever else they love. It's pretty lame and you won't get anything good out of it.

Instead, why not show passion for the things you like? It doesn't need to be big, it can be simple as drawing, buying, listening or whatever. There isn't a single right way to showcase that.

Getting off the soapbox now, so...
